How To Coordinate Outfits for Family Photos - Fall Edition
I used to dread having to decide what to wear for family photos because I had no clue what I was doing and lacked any confidence when it came to coordinating. If that's you or you'd just like some confirmation then you've come to the right place.
First though, I want to leave you with a caveat. There's not really a right or wrong way to do this. I'm going to share my thoughts with you on what works for me but if you have a specific vibe you are going for this may not answer your questions. In addition, if you are working with a professional photographer, then I'd suggest asking him or her for their recommendations. The reason for this is that the photographer might be using a certain location where specific colors make more sense or depending on their style of photography, they may actually prefer something different than me. And that's ok!
#1 Pick 2-3 Colors
Start by choosing 2-3 colors to work with. I personally like to dress myself first. Find something that you love and that you feel comfortable in. Then, coordinate from there. If you already know that someone will be wearing an outfit with multiple colors, then I'd start there instead.
If you have no clue where to start with this, you can go to Pinterest and look up fall photoshoots or check out my fall outfit inspiration board.
#2 Vary Shades Instead of Matchy-Matchy
This one may come to a surprise! I just told you to pick 2-3 colors so why doesn't the whole family just buy the same plaid shirt and throw on some blue jeans? While you can do this, this likely doesn't represent your family. Instead try to coordinate colors. So if you picked burgundy and blue for your two colors, add in a light blue and a pink. Or perhaps you picked demin and cream. Don't be afraid to add in a brown.
Check out this pinterest board to give you some more ideas on how to vary the shades of the colors you picked.
#3 Add in Accessories and Layers
Don't forget about accessories! Add in cardigans, vests, scarves, bows, headbands, ties, bowties, suspenders, bonnets, etc.
Conclusion
Find some color inspiration either in your own wardrobe or on Pinterest. Stick with 2-3 colors and add in some different shades. Throw in some accessories and layers. When in doubt, run your outfit choices by your photographer. I'm sure he or she would be happy to provide you with any feedback.
